Initially sceptical of its unorthodox methods and the enigmatic figurehead, DCI Higson, Andrew is thrust into a world where the boundary between the living and the dead is far blurrier than he’d ever realised.

Andrew's innate scepticism and reliance on evidence-based procedures challenge his ability to work with Peggy Swan, a reclusive ex-socialite with an extraordinary gift. Despite their differences, he quickly realises that their collaboration is essential to solving the complex case of Marnie Driscoll's death.

Andrew must find a way to adapt to the Ballroom's unique approach to investigations. His determination, attention to detail, and commitment to uncovering the truth will make him an integral part of the team as they unravel the carefully concealed secrets surrounding Marnie's murder.

Peggy Swan just wants to be left alone.

After a tumultuous year, Peggy has embraced a more reclusive lifestyle, in contrast to her former life amidst the glitz and glamour of high society.

Even though Peggy believes in the importance of uncovering the truth to bring closure to Marnie Driscoll’s family, DI Joyce's scepticism tests her resolve at every turn, leaving Peggy unsure of just how much help she can truly be.

As the investigation deepens, DCI Higson suggests a bold and unconventional approach — Peggy is to go undercover at Marnie’s former place of work to find out more about the young woman’s life. Peggy uncovers a labyrinth of secrets and deception, where darkness lurks just beneath the surface of the primped and polished Lewis’s Perfume Hall.

If she has any hope of helping the Ballroom team solve the mystery of Marnie’s death, Peggy must navigate the complexities of trust and collaboration, ultimately needing to rely on both her unlikely partner, DI Joyce, and the enigmatic Marnie herself.

DCI Higson

DCI Higson is an enigma to all who encounter him.

While he is considered a member of the old guard within the city's police force, Higson's career has taken an unconventional path.

Rather than ascend through the hallowed ranks of CID, Higson instead deliberately carved his niche as the enigmatic figurehead of the Case Re-examination Division.

Within the walls of the Ballroom, Higson has nurtured a place where traditional investigative methods meld seamlessly with the eccentric and unconventional. He is willing to explore any avenue, regardless of how peculiar it may seem, if it seems as though it might bring his team closer to rescuing a floundering investigation.

Not much is known about Higson’s past at this stage, but with Peggy Swan around it’s safe to say that any long-dead secrets won’t stay dead forever.

DS Jennifer Cusack

Jen Cusack is hard-working, practical, and exceptionally good at her job. When it seems that the Ballroom is descending into chaos, it’s Jen’s level-headed thinking that keeps the investigation on track. She’s a credit to her profession, but it’s still 1986, and the Old Boys’ Club of the police force isn’t necessarily ready for a woman like her.

Despite the challenges she faces as a trailblazing female officer in a male-centric environment, Jen's determination remains unshaken.

Her presence on Tib Street is yet to be fully explained, but it’s clear that Jen wants to be part of the Ballroom team, no matter how strange that may seem to an outsider. Jen has the determination required to overcome any barriers she faces in a profession defined by tradition. Her steadfastness and dedication to the cause make her an invaluable member of the Ballroom team.

DC Lloyd Parker

Lloyd is the youngest member of the Ballroom team, bringing an infectious enthusiasm (and endless biscuits) to every investigation that lands on Higson’s desk.

As a friend of Charlie Swan, it is Lloyd who suggests bringing Peggy into the Driscoll investigation. Outside of the Ballroom, Lloyd boasts the most vibrant and active social life, in stark contrast to the more secretive DCI Higson and reserved DI Joyce. His easygoing and amiable nature makes him the glue that binds the diverse personalities of the team together, providing a much-needed counterbalance to the intensity of the investigations they undertake.

Marnie Driscoll

Marnie Driscoll's story defies the boundaries of life and death.

Initially dismissed as a random act of opportunistic violence by CID, Marnie’s untimely death left behind a trail of unanswered questions.

Newly engaged and excited about her future, it seems that even death itself isn’t enough to stop vivacious Marnie from trying to live her life.

With a new ally in the form of Peggy Swan, Marnie embarks on a journey that transcends the boundaries of the living and the dead as she tries to recall the details of the night she died in an attempt to bring closure to her own tragic story from beyond the grave.

Charlie Swan

Charlie is Peggy’s much more sociable younger brother. Unlike his sister, he thrives on the bustling nightlife of the city, choosing nights out with friends over the responsibilities that come with the Swan family's estate.

However, despite his carefree lifestyle, Charlie remains fiercely protective of his sister, and his loyalty to her knows no bounds.

While Charlie may not officially be part of the Ballroom team, his tenacity and extensive network of connections prove invaluable when it comes to uncovering information that eludes traditional routes of investigation. His ability to navigate the city's social scene and gather intelligence from unexpected sources makes him an indispensable resource for the team.
